I just recently discovered mussels while in Italy. I'm not typically a fan of this type of seafood, but I became a fan very quickly after my first bite of a good mussel. Which sounds very weird when said aloud.
These were great. The meat was strong, but not chewy. Very juicy on their own, but the sauce that they were sitting in added a tremendous amount of flavor. Garlic, tomato, onion, lots of butter. I honestly could have drank the sauce if it were appropriate. It was a fantastic way to begin our Valentine's day dinner, and these were probably the best mussels I've ever had. A little sweet, salty, buttery, savory. A complete dish that made for a Bigtime app.
