Snow Egg at Ostra in Boston, MA. I don’t post a ton of desserts (even though I have a sweet tooth), but this Snow Egg was so unique and tasty, that I had to file a scouting report for it. The centerpiece of this one-of-a-kind dessert was a delicate meringue casing the shape of an egg. On top of the egg was the snow - a light, yet prickly nest of spun sugar with the texture and taste of cotton candy. Sitting underneath the egg were raspberries along with a trace of basil syrup. Cracking the shell open revealed a light and savory lemon curd mousse. The result of mixing it all together was a medley of textures and flavors that were light, airy, and delicious. No single ingredient overpowered any other ingredient and they complemented each other well. Two fresh basil leaves nestled within the “snow” added an unexpected, yet refreshing herbal component to the sweet flavors of the snow egg. Terrific ending to a great meal. Ostra is a contemporary Mediterranean restaurant with an amazingly diverse menu. Don’t miss their Sea Bass Tartare, which is one of my all-time favorite dishes anywhere in the world (one of my Hall of Fame dishes on Bigtime Bites). I also love their Ricotta Gnochetti with Maine Lobster and Cuttlefish Ink Radiatore with Razor Clams.
