Recently opened in Charleston, Lewis BBQ has roots at Austin's famed Franklin BBQ and is known for its brisket. It is a really cool indoor/outdoor space with tons of seating and a pleasant courtyard area. My wife and I shared the brisket and the country-fried steak, the daily special for Sundays. The brisket was solid, but the country-fried steak was the favorite for both of us. The meat had an amazing, crunchy, well-spiced, thick-but-not-too-thick crust, and the meat itself was almost fork tender, a rare feat for the usually tough cut of meat typically used in this dish. Besides the delicious steak itself, the gravy that came on top further set this dish apart. This gravy was cooked with green chile peppers, giving it an unexpected tang and slight heat. Pair this with some yummy sides (mac n cheese, mashed potatoes, and chile corn pudding pictured) and you've got a legit bigtime meal.
