Renzo Pizzeria and Wine is a fairly new spot located near the upper King St corridor in Charleston, SC. The owners are well-known for their low key bar across the street, The Faculty Lounge and decided to open up this fantastic pizzeria on the ever developing Huger St. The pizzeria has many pizza options but the star of the night for our group was the “Mayor Quimby” pizza. To start, the dough/crust base of all the pizzas we had were outstanding. The dough was soft yet chewy and had that extra crisp from the airy, bubbly charred edges. For the Mayor Quimby Pizza, the white cremé sauce in place of the regular red/tomatoe sauce was rich and had the oceanic saltiness quality that when mixed with fresh garlic made a strong foundation. The little neck clam pieces gave the thin pizza some texture as well as a sweet brininess. While the roasted chard provide a deep herbal, smoky aroma and a little bitterness to help balance out the salty, sweet clam and white sauce. With a squeeze of lemon and drizzle of olive oil, this pizza tops my list of Bigtime pizzas I’ve had so far.
