scouting report R. Cho
04/27/18 I’m always on the hunt for a good burger, so when I was up in NYC recently, I asked a couple foodie friends where I could find the best burger in the City. Simultaneously, they both emphatically said “Gramercy Tavern.” This burger was definitely Bigtime and lived up to the billing. The meat itself was the star of the show, as it wasn’t the typical cut of meat you find in most burgers. Made of three types of meat - chuck, brisket, and short rib, the delicious patty was thick and juicy and cooked perfectly on a wood-fired grill to my requested specification (medium rare). Plenty of crispy bacon accompanied the burger along with a smoked onion aioli dressing (similar to a Russian dressing). I loved the soft bun, which was a warm and lightly toasted, house-made potato bun with sesame seeds. Serving contemporary American food, Gramercy Tavern is a bustling and vibrant restaurant comprised of the Tavern (a bar area with small tables), which is walk-in only, and the Dining Room, which takes reservations up to 28 days in advance. The burger is only available in the Tavern. They apparently used to limit the amount of burgers they would make per night, but I confirmed that is no longer the case and it’s available at both lunch and dinner. Located in the Flatiron District, Gramercy Tavern is a non-tipping restaurant known for their impeccable service (our server was amazing) and has earned nine James Beard awards!
