Mamakas is a hopping Greek spot on the lively Ossington strip just west of downtown Toronto. My wife and I were walking in the neighborhood and looked in the window of this place and saw a cool open kitchen and inviting vibe and decided to stop in for a bite and a beer. We sat at the bar and got to watch the chefs working and we ordered an old classic - spanikopita. We were really impressed with their take on it. While usually layered like a lasagna, this version was rolled up in a pinwheel, which maximized the amount of flaky phyllo dough. The inside had the standard spinach/feta combo, which was salty and a little earthy from the spinach. There was a creamy dairy base drizzled with honey that balanced out the saltiness of the rest of the components. We really enjoyed our experience at Mamakas and it is definitely worth stopping in and getting the spanikopita if you are in Toronto. Lots of other cool places in the neighborhood too.
