Tan Hai Van is a popular late night, street food restaurant located in District 1 in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. The restaurant is known for having a casual, small bites atmosphere and the Lemongrass Clams were the prefect start for our meal. For this dish, it starts with the savory broth made from chili peppers, galanga root (ginger like root), kaffir lime leaves and most importantly fresh stalks of lemongrass. This gets mixed in with light fish sauce and the brininess from fresh clams to form a delicate, sweet, savory and spicy broth that is scooped up as you pick up each clam shell. The clam flesh itself is salty and sweet and has a great chewy texture that lends itself beautifully with the delicious broth. If there’s any broth left, ask for a bowl of rice so you can drench the rice bowl with the broth as to leave no evidence. Enjoy this addictive appetizer and don’t be scared to order another. For only $0.50 USD it might be worth the flight to Vietnam for this traditional dish.
