scouting report R. Cho
09/15/23 Pork Curry at Hom Duan in Bangkok, Thailand. Curries can really vary across different ethnicities. Japanese, Chinese, Indian, Malaysian, Thai, and Burmese curries all vary slightly in texture and flavor as well as thickness and consistency of the accompanying curry broth. Just within the Thai culture, red, green, masaman, and panang curries are all totally different. It’s been a long time since I’ve been blown away by a curry dish - most are reasonable facsimiles of each other and nothing memorable. Hom Duan’s version of pork curry was Bigtime! Although a Thai restaurant, their version of pork curry reminded me most of Burmese curry from a flavor standpoint. I went there for the Khao Soi (which was also good), but the pork curry stole the show. A generous portion of pork is stewed in a curry broth that was so flavorful and had a sweetness to it that I haven’t found in too many other curries. The pork had little to zero fat and was so tender that it could easily be separated by my spoon. The consistency of the curry broth was just right - not too thick from unnecessary corn starch and not too thin. Hom Duan is located in the Ekkamai district just a few stops away from the Sukhumvit Asoke BTS station. Don’t miss it if you’re a fan of curry!! Cash only (Thai bhat)!!
