Mohinga Soup at Yunnan Market in Chiang Mai, Thailand. Mohinga is the national dish of Burma, where I was born, so I’ve always had an affinity for mohinga and Burmese cuisine in general. It’s a little bit hard to describe because it’s so unique, but fish chowder with vermicelli noodles is probably the best way to describe it. This version at Yunnan Market, which is only open Friday mornings from 5 am to Noon in Chiang Mai, was excellent. Unlike some of the vendor stalls that sell a variety of dishes, it’s run by a Burmese lady who serves mohinga only, which is her specialty. Fish, onions, fried shallots, garlic, fried split peas, egg, cilantro and a multitude of spices make up the ingredients of Mohinga broth, which can vary depending on the region where the chef is from. This version was just right, as the consistency of the broth was not too thick and not too watery, and the flavor was terrific. Yunnan Market is located in the Chang Klan Night Bazaar area (Thapae Road, Soi 1), and it is on two sides of the street. You may have to go to the other side of the street if you can’t initially find this Mohinga lady’s stall. If you love authentic Burmese soup, don’t miss this place next time you’re in Chiang Mai!
