Tucked away in a small movie theatre plaza, Royal Biryani & Kabob has some of the most authentic Indian food in Charlotte. The goat paya and chicken biryani(not pictured but a must try) were comforting and conjured up images of my youth, when I was first invited to a friend's house for dinner and introduced to the rich and beautiful world that is Indian cuisine. Each bite is savory, yet never overwhelming. Do not be scared away if you do not enjoy spicy food, everything was well tempered and balanced. I myself am a capsaicin connoisseur who tried to ask for the dish to be extra spicy, but the owner insisted that I have it in its traditional preparation as to not have all of the complex flavors masked by heat. I'm glad that I listened to him. In a Charlotte restaurant scene that can at times seem to get more hung up on whether your Mai Tai has the perfect garnishing rather than the actual quality of the meal, it was refreshing to sip mango lassi out of a styrofoam cup and enjoy some nice home cooking.
