08/13/17 This smoked prime rib at Lewis Barbeque is a can't miss item... and considering it is only released on Wednesday's from 11am until it sells out, you really might miss out six days of the week. Lewis BBQ is fairly new to the Charleston food scene (just celebrated its 1 year anniversary) but the owner/pit master (John Lewis) is a veteran from Austin, TX and former pit master of the acclaimed Franklin BBQ. He decided to move to Charleston after having much success with his flagship BBQ venture, La Barbeque in Austin. The Lewis BBQ building is a beautifully built structure from the ground up. The inside has wood tones and open air feel that connects directly with the exterior. The gravel patio is a throwback to the Austin, TX area with a large live oak tree providing canopy over the dining area and large picnic tables. The real wow factor are the tree hung lights resembling birds nest that light up patio next to the smokehouse at night. This is a picture worthy patio. Lewis BBQ is open everyday except Monday... now back to the prime rib. First and foremost, this dish is a rarity because of the "smoked" factor. This prime rib is as tender and juicy as any I have ever had. It is smoked to the perfect rare, red, juiciness giving it a buttery mouth feel. The meat melts with hints of smoke at every bite and doesn't require much chewing. It is perfectly seasoned with a simple salt and pepper rub (and probably other proprietary spices) that coats the exterior and doesn't over power the meat. The skin created by the seasoning/smoke is not too thick and provides a nice saltiness to the meat. They serve the au jous smothering the meat in a pool that I would do laps in if given the opportunity. It is also served with a side of thick housemade home style cut fries and ketchup. The fries the seasoned well with salt. The ketchup is a mix of BBQ flavored and tomato base and also has that hint of smoke that John Lewis is known for. The prime rib meal will set you back at $25, but it's worth it and more. I also order Lewis' famous "Hot Guts" spicy sausage ($5 per link) which will require another scouting report on its own because it is THAT good!!! When in CHARLESTON, SC on a Wednesday be sure to check out this smoked prime rib before it sells out!!!
