I have lived in New England my entire life, so the amount of lobster rolls consumed in my lifetime lined up would wrap around the world at least 47 times. I generally feel that many lobster rolls are of the same quality, delicious, but similar. The classic lobster roll is a combo of chunky and stringy lobster meat with mayo or butter on a hot dog bun.The only debate being whether you prefer butter or mayo.
However, the lobster roll at Eventide Oyster Co. in Portland, ME is a step above any lobster roll I have ever eaten. This roll has chosen to skip the classic hot dog bun, and replace it with a steamed bun, which for me and my dining companions was the main reason this roll reigns supreme. In addition to the change in the lobster holder, Eventide has also elected for a brown butter base, which really allows all the flavors from lobster to steamed bun to jump off the plate. All in all, the experience of eating this lobster roll can only be described as a religious experience. This dish is a top 5 meal I have ever eaten, which makes it a bucket list/hall-of-fame dish, and a must-try before you die. My only hope is that one day you are lucky enough to find yourself on Middle Street in Portland, ME.
Lastly, one tip - if there's a line, ask to stand at the counter, the wait for seats tends to be around 45 - 90 minutes. The standing room spots allow you to eat without the wait.
