09/06/17 Being around college kids a lot, I eat a fair share of pizza so it's not a real mouth-watering draw anymore. Except when I'm at The Shore - the Jersey Shore - in Bradley Beach/Avon-by-the-Sea, NJ. Adjacent to those idyllic beach villages is an institution called Pete & Elda's Bar/Carmen's Pizzeria. Pete & Elda's refers to the bar portion of the establishment and the kitchen that puts out these Franchise Pies, is Carmen's Pizzeria. Short-hand, it's just "Pete & Elda's." The crust is the star: thin and cracker-y, supportive of the savory toppings and provides a spectacular little crunch. The sauce compliments itself - tomato and spice masterfully blended - and spread throughout in proper proportion, the real talent of any pizza-master. Cheese - fresh; Meats - east coast quality and well-laden; Vegetables - al dente and comfortably resting in the sauce&cheese. My wife is not a pizza lover, more like, pizza tolerator - but in the years since she first enjoyed - nearly took down a whole - Pete & Elda's olive and fresh-tomato XL, it's one of her Top 5 faves of our Jersey Shore vacays - not Top 5 foods or meals, but Top 5 experiences - somewhere close to biking through Ocean Grove and sitting on the Doyle's porch at Happy Hour. Honestly, it's almost too easy to crush one of these XLs - that's how good it is. Next time you are traveling on the Garden State Parkway or hanging out at the Hoop Group headquarters, take a rewarding detour over to the corner of Route 35 & Woodland Ave.
