scouting report S. Be
09/11/17 Fat Rice is located on the north side of Chicago, not too far from Wrigley Field. The restaurant combines flavors from various South to Far East Asian countries. On this occasion we tried different small plates and entree dishes to share, but the one that stood apart for me was the Portuguese Egg Tart. It's slightly different from the Chinese versions I've grown up eating because of how dense the pastry shell is in comparison and also the sweetness level of the egg custard center. The pastry crust is as flaky and buttery as they come. It's soft and moist, with the edges slightly charred. The crust layers seem to cascade into your mouth or onto the plate below with every bite (don't forget to clean the plate, no wasting). The egg custard center is creamy with just the right amount of chewiness and it tends to lean more on the sweet side rather than tart, but this makes sense for it being a dessert. For $3 a piece, the egg tarts are served fresh out the oven, hot/warm to your table and usually can only be found during brunch/lunch. So before a Cubs game, check out Fat Rice. Until the next BTB ✌🏽
