Traditionally, I'm not a big BBQ guy. It just doesn't do much for me. It's not that I don't enjoy it when it's done right, but BBQ just isn't something I proactively seek out. With one exception: Joe's Kansas City (formerly known as Oklahoma Joe's) has completely ruined all other BBQ in the world for me. To say this place tantalizes the senses of any and every carnivore is the understatement of the year. Each time I step out of my car in this gas station parking lot (yes, the OG restaurant resides inside a gas station, which only adds to the mystique), everything feels right in the world. It's not uncommon whatsoever to begin salivating while walking past the vents toward the front entrance. Some advice: don't be turned off by the long line - there's always a long line - these guys are pros and it goes by in no time. Additionally, everything this place pumps out is outstanding, so just follow your nose and you will be more than satisfied. For this particular report, I decided to highlight the brisket and the pulled pork, which were my top two choices for the "Two Meat Dinner" on my most recent stop through town. The perfect smoky flavor on both meats is unlike anything I've ever experienced. There was very little noticeable fat/gristle and my only regret with this bigtime bite was lathering on too much BBQ sauce, because this stuff doesn't really even need it. Vet move: grab some bottles of your favorite KC BBQ sauce on the way out (pay at the gas station register) if you want to elevate your personal BBQ sauce collection.
