10/10/17 Leon’s is located in the upper King St. area of Charleston and is my go to spot for a relaxing lunch in an airy, rustic venue. One dish I always get when coming here is the Char-Grilled Oysters to start. The oysters are local South Carolina oysters which are plump, briny, crisp and delicious in raw form. But Char-grilling them the way Leon’s does gives them that over the top, distinct quality only present to this restaurant. Each half shell ($13 for 6/order) is lightly coated with lemon, butter, parsley and parmesan cheese and grilled. The coating does not overpower or mask the oyster flavor. Grilling the shells causes the butter, lemon and cheese to bubble, blend and mingle with the natural brininess of the oyster. When your dish arrives, each half shell is a melting pot of silky, salty and smoky flavors. The oysters aren’t over cooked and maintain their chewy texture with each bite releasing a rush of sea water to compliment the parmesan and melted butter. I always have a few pools of buttery goodness left in each shell, so the grilled toasts served with each order acts as my sponge to sop up all the remaining liquid gold. Be sure to check out Leon’s, the grilled oysters are a must. ✌🏽
