10/21/17 I know what you might be thinking: "Avocado on a piece of bread? Bigtime Bites is no such place for this!" Let me explain. Maybe it was because it was my first meal after coming off a three-day juice cleanse. Or maybe it was just THAT good. Realistically, the answer for why this avocado toast qualifies as a bigtime bite lies somewhere in the middle. Monuts - now a bustling bakery/cafe in downtown Durham - actually began as a donut food truck. It has become a go-to of mine when looking for something quick, tasty, filling, and affordable pre or post-Duke practice. I also like that you can go healthy (see: Toast, Avocado) at a place called "Monuts." Sure, you can definitely indulge in some delicious, homemade, fat-and-sugar-filled fare, but there is more to the menu than donuts and breakfast sandwiches. I love this particular avocado toast due to its simplicity. You can count the ingredients on one hand: homemade focaccia, avocado (obviously), pepitas (pumpkin seeds) and some crushed red pepper to make it pop. I am not ashamed to say that I ran this thing back. It also paired quite well with some Counter Culture (local Durham roastery) cold brew. You may not notice this bigtime bite on the menu at first glance, but it's there, in the "sides" section. Vet move: if you don't want to stand in line (it can get pretty long on the weekend), grab a seat at the bar and get served faster. The people watching is great, too!
