Fried chicken and rice is a combination as successful, reliable, and proven as a Stockton-Malone pick-and-roll, and Thai-Kun's simple, spicy offering runs the play to perfection. This particular food truck is located in the outdoor area of East Austin cocktail bar Whisler's, so feel free to pair a well-made drink or three with your meal. The chicken thigh came out freshly fried, with plenty of crunchy, flavorful cragginess on the outside and juiciness on the inside. The side of jasmine rice glistened with chicken fat and is infused with subtle ginger and garlic flavor. One look into the small cup of "boom sauce" reveals a dark pool densely packed with dried chili seeds. The boom sauce takes about a second to wrap your tastebuds in a sweet embrace before laying them out with a fiery, spicy, lingering heat. The cold slices of thick cucumber provided a fresh snap and temporary cooling relief. Comfort food at it's best and available late.
