scouting report Matthew Tessnear
12/15/17 I rarely order dessert when I dine out, and it’s even rarer that I order cheesecake. But an option to sample a Sweet Potato Cheesecake will always bait me. The best I’ve ever had came at the now-closed Gladys Knight’s Chicken & Waffles in Atlanta, Georgia. Since I can’t get that version anymore, I’m glad this option at Mayworth’s Public House presented itself on a recent visit to the small yet absolutely charming community of Cramerton, just a couple miles from McAdenville’s famed Christmastown USA light display. This Cheesecake is incredibly creamy without being too rich, carrying a subtle and appropriately sweet mashed sweet potato flavor. It’s topped with the nuttiness of chopped pecan pieces and sprinkled with pumpkin spice for that familiar fall taste. The plate is then decorated with a drizzle of sweet caramel sauce. Magnificent! The Cheesecake isn’t an overwhelming serving like some New York-Style Cheesecakes that tower from the plate and fall at the first fork plunge. But it’s a generous serving and an inexpensive bargain of a dessert at $5.99. Definitely a Bigtime Bite and a perfect closer to a great Sunday afternoon meal.
