Rodney Scott is a BBQ legend, with appearances on Top Chef and a ton of other shows, articles on him in publications across the country, and wins in several big competitions. The ribs at his place in Charleston show why he's gotten so much attention. They are the single best bite of food I've had in a long time. These huge ribs have an amazing thick bark/skin that gives way to the perfect rib meat. Pick an adjective - meaty, tender, juicy, flavorful, smoky - none of them do these ribs justice. It's like you can actually taste the time and care that goes into smoking the meat. And there is just something fun about eating meat off the bone. The restaurant's most renowned dish is actually its whole-hog pulled BBQ plate, which is also exceptional, as are the sides - we've had the fries, mac n cheese, potato salad, and baked beans and would gladly get any one of them again. When we went to the restaurant this past weekend, on a delicious detour on our way home to Charlotte from Savannah, it was an off time and Rodney happened to be at the restaurant making the rounds with diners, so we got to meet him and chat with him for a bit. He could not have been more gracious and you can tell he loves what he does. There is obviously a ton to do and a lot of great restaurants in Charleston, but Rodney Scott's BBQ should be at the top of the list of attractions if you are even remotely close to the area, and is probably worth a trip to Charleston on its own. It is my first HOF for a reason!
