I've been on a breakfast for lunch kick lately. Joe's Bakery has a throwback vibe, with lots of festive color, closely spaces tables and booths, a diner style bar and a jukebox which randomly blasts tunes. Importantly, Joe's offers all day breakfast. More importantly, Joe's offers battered bacon. Yes, battered bacon is as good as you imagine: one of those small, simple twists, which somehow elevates a food as close to deliciously perfect and satisfying as bacon. It's as if Anthony Davis developed the range and wetness of Steph Curry's shot, a monster truly unleashed. The battered bacon is thick-cut, generously battered and served freshly-fried, oil still glistening. The thickness of the bacon plus the battered crust deliver an enormously satisfying crunch, the bacon has just the right amount of porky, salty flavor, and the texture and taste combine into an experience much like eating a lighter version of fried pork belly. The bacon can be ordered a la carte, or included with a variety of the breakfast dishes. My go-to is the huevos rancheros, which I order with two fried eggs smothered in a red, peppery salsa, refried beans, fried, thick slices of seasoned potatoes, and two fresh flour tortillas to tear up and mop the gooey mix which inevitably results.
