03/20/18 Tacos de Chicharron at Xochi in Houston, TX. It’s not often that you find pork belly tacos on a menu, so when I saw these tacos at Xochi, I jumped at the chance to order them. Xochi’s version is terrific and worthy of being in your rotation when you’re looking for a good meal. Resting on a blue corn tortilla, the pork belly had some crispness to the outside but was tender and juicy on the inside. Accompanied by pickled red onions and served with both refritos (refried beans) and salsa on the side, the taco was clean and simple, allowing you to taste the savory flavor of the pork belly without being overwhelmed with other accompaniments. Each order comes with two tacos, and left me perfectly satisfied, but not too stuffed after a lunch time meal. Xochi is located in a beautiful modern space in the Marriott Marquis hotel and is owned and operated by James Beard award-winning chef Hugo Ortega. Serving a diverse menu with dishes inspired by Oaxaca, Mexico, Xochi is open for both lunch and dinner and late on Friday and Saturday nights (11 pm). I also loved their corn soup.
