Traditionally, I'm not a huge pastry guy - but when something this special enters the picture, I throw tradition out the window. Maybe it's the crisp, clean Bend air, maybe it's the way the baker perfectly blends savory and sweet flavors together, or maybe it's all of the above. Regardless, Sparrow Bakery's 'Ocean Roll' is unlike any pastry I've ever encountered. For lack of a better term, this thing is BIGTIME. These delicacies are made from scratch every morning. I had to do a little bit of digging to find out exactly what comprises an Ocean Roll and found the following: they begin with traditional croissant dough that they make in-house; then, they add a layer of cardamom (this is the differentiating ingredient, in my opinion), sugar and vanilla; then they roll it up, add “a splash of egg white” and “bake it to golden perfection.” Perfection, indeed. This is a treat that must not be missed on your next trip to Bend (one of my favorite places in the world, FYI). If this isn’t obvious to you, make sure to pair the roll(s) with coffee!
